GCS Recommends: Tombstone

Westerns don’t always get the credit they deserve, which is a shame–especially when it comes to movies like Tombstone. The plot of this 1993 classic centers around a showdown that results when a group of newcomers to Tombstone, Arizona throw down with a local gang of ruffians known as the Cowboys. Tombstone was directed by it’s main star, Kurt Russell, and boasts an ensemble cast featuring Val Kilmer, Sam Elliot, and Bill Paxton.
The film has many of the aspects you’d probably expect from a Western–a new sheriff in town, real good guys, real bad guys, a showdown gunfight–but it just doesn’t feel like a Western to me. So even if this particular genre isn’t your thing, give this one a try–it’s an exceptional drama that happens to be set in the old American West.
GCS highly recommends Tombstone–not only as one of the best Westerns ever made, but as an American classic that stands the test of time.
